This is one of the best hostels I’ve ever stayed at, and I’ve slept on many a hostel bed.
The Lisbon Poets Hostel is cheap (a bed in a room of 4 runs €18 during low season, €20 during high season), stylish yet homey, spacious yet cozy, centrally located, and has a small, friendly staff (headed by the owners – a young couple who are there almost all the time).
A basic breakfast of all you can eat fresh rolls, butter, marmalade, scrambled eggs, cereal, coffee, milk, and juice is included in the price of your stay. In the kitchen, you can make your own lunch or dinner to eat at the tables in the common room, where there are also two computers with free internet access, comfy bean bags and a hammock by the wall of windows to lounge on after a long day of walking up and down Lisbon’s hilly, cobblestone streets, and a couch and TV for your enjoyment.
In terms of safety, the building door, floor door, and room doors are locked and can be opened with card-keys, and each room has decent-sized locker-drawers under the bottom beds for each person, which can also be locked.
There is no curfew, but guests are asked to keep the noise down to a respectable level after 10 PM.
Male and female bathrooms and showers are separate, and are cleaned daily.
Another plus: elevator!
But the best thing about the Poets Hostel was that it is right at the Baixa-Chiado metro stop and right above the famous A Brasileira cafe on the Largo do Chiado (Chiado square). Every night, different street musicians come and sit on the end of the staircase that rises from the metro and play to the audience of passers-by and cafe patrons. The sounds floats to the hostel windows four floors above, and if you’re feeling too worn out for a night of bar-hopping in the adjacent Bairro Alto, you can just relax on the hammock and enjoy the beautiful scene from above for as long as you want.
Lisbon Poets Hostel also offers private rooms at another location (from €42/45 – €65/70). See website for more details and photos, a map, more useful links, and booking.

I really loved the hostel because it’s cheap, modern and there is a friendly atmosphere! And of course, the location is superb! A perfect starting point to discover Lisbon.
We also stayed one night in the private rooms. Not bad, but it lacks a bit the nice atmosphere that you can feel in the hostel.
