Quetzal in Ghent

I probably don’t need to convince many people that chocolate is the best thing ever (ladies, am I right?). I for one am a hardcore chocoholic…in fact, the Mayans are my favorite civilization ever because, although they made that crazy calendar everyone’s freaking out about these days, they still gave the world chocolate and I can’t be mad at that!

Much later, the Belgians were smart enough to embrace and perfect the production of  chocolate, an essential part of [my] daily life. Now besides being known for the world’s best chocolates, Belgium is also know for its bar culture. And one place that blends Belgium’s “bar culture” and fine chocolates is Quetzal: De Chocoladebar (that means, the chocolate bar…if you didn’t get it).

Quetzal is…well, a little slice of heaven where you can get pretty much any kind of chocolate you want in almost any physical form: cold liquid (milkshakes and smoothies), hot liquid (hot chocolates, coffee blends, cocktails, and sauces), plasma (mousse and ice creams), solid (brownies and cookies)….OK maybe not gaseous, but there’s got to be something left to invent…

Everything at Quetzal is as mouthwatering as you are imagining. The blended hot drinks with cinnamon and cream or amaretto or baileys (for a little kick!) are perfect for a cold Belgian morning or afternoon, and the ice cream with fresh brownies and fruit mixed in and hot chocolate syrup on top is perfect for any spring or summer day.

The piece de resistance is definitely the fondue for two (or more, but why would you wanna share with too many people?). It’s a platter that comes with assorted fruit, marshmallows, and crackers for dipping in warm, dark and milk chocolate. Sorry, no photos, was too busy devouring it. It’s simple, but it’s just the best thing ever. The chocolate they use is so creamy and rich, you’ll definitely leave with a lil’ sugar shock.

The prices are just OK. For example, the fondue for 2 is €16 which seems like a lot to me, but then again, most things in Gent or in Belgium are not cheap. Drinks are around €3.50 and ice creams are around €5, which isn’t bad, especially for the great quality of all the products.

Come here for breakfast on your way to work or school, in the afternoon for a snack, or in the late evening for a post-dinner treat (they’re open till 11PM on weekdays!).

By the way, in case you won’t be able to make it to Ghent on your trip to Belgium (although Quetzal might be worth a trip there on its own), there is also an Antwerp location, in case that is on your itinerary!
